The Meaning of Honto

Honto (ほんとう) means “true”, “real”, "genuine" in Japanese.

Honto reflects sincerity in every decision we make, intention behind every product we share, and a deep respect for the traditions that have defined Japan’s craftsmanship long before the world came to admire it. Matcha, to us, is not simply a drink.
It is a moment of stillness, a gesture of respect, and a craft refined through centuries of discipline, patience, and quiet beauty.

 

Honto is our promise — to honour that truth, to share matcha and regional Japanese products in their purest and most authentic form, and to celebrate the farmers, artisans, and makers whose hands and hearts bring these traditions to life.

To nurture a cultural and human connection between Japan and Canada through craftsmanship and tradition — creating space for reflection, reconnection, and a deeper appreciation of people, community, and the earth.


How The Honto Started

The Honto was born from something deeply personal — a blend of my roots and the life I built in Canada.
Living abroad made me see Japan with new eyes.
In unfamiliar surroundings, it was tea that grounded me.
A simple cup became my comfort, my connection to home, and a reminder of where I come from.
Tea wasn’t just a drink — it was my anchor, my identity.
But as I experienced Japanese products overseas, I realized something was missing.
So much of Japan’s craftsmanship — especially matcha — was being reduced to trends, stripped of the stories, traditions, and pride behind them.
The work of farmers and artisans, carried through generations, wasn’t being seen for what it truly is.
I wanted to change that.
I wanted to share the real essence of Japan — the people, the regions, the craft.
I wanted to build a bridge between Japan and Canada, shaped by sincerity and cultural respect.
That is why I created The Honto.
It is not just a brand; it is my mission.
A way to honour the artisans who keep tradition alive, and to let the world experience the depth and truth behind every cup.
